Winter Trophy ‘10

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Another edition of Winter Trophy has ended. Our performance was pretty piss-poor. Lost every game on Saturday. Against Carnegie, I probably played one of my worst games ever. We played Frizzly Bears (L:11-13), Viksjöfors (L:4-13), Frövi (L:9-12), Carnegie (L), Mönsterås (W:13-(something less than 8)) and Farmers (W:12-11). We lost 5 consecutive points to Farmers before winning..

Viksjöfors (SWE) won the open final against Karhukopla (FIN), and Viima (FIN) won the women’s final against The Animals (GB).

I must commend the Winter Trophy TO’s for the whole setup with the accommodation/dinner/party included in the player fee. Apparently the Saturday buffet kept running out of chicken, but I never really suffered from it since I had sushi somewhere completely different.

No Breaks #6 saw the light of day around February 5th. I’m bringing my LED discs to Paga for sure. The Thursday night party with free pasta and red wine wouldn’t be the same without LED discs!

Stockholm Syndromes @ Paganello Pt 3

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The saturday is a blur of winning games. We ended up playing 45 Giri, which earlier amused me, only by the connection to their seed at 45th place. They were a good bunch of locals that didn’t put us into too much trouble, we beat them by 12-3.

The game after was FSL, and I don’t really remember anything about it. At all. Except winning. There are no photos, since our designated still photographer became the designated film camera man. The game ended 14-5. When I think about it, the Good Old Boys also slipped my mind. Most important thing is that we won I guess, 15-7.

Sunday morning was a different story. Walking home from the pitches we met most of the young Swedish team Tailspin walking in the opposite direction, pretty tanked and geared up for the roman party in the tent. This made us a bit calmer for the morning game, thinking that it would affect them quite a bit. Problem was, that quite a few of our players also went to the tent, tanked and geared too.

15 minutes before game time, only one Tailspin-player can be seen. Unfortunately, they soon all emerge at the pitch, totally different from what we met last night. Damn these youngsters. During their pep talk, I overhear them stating “We can’t loose to Stockholm!”. I was a bit afraid that they would run us over without problems. But the game became quite intense, and a rule difference between WFDF and UPA sparked a discussion; whether you should check the disc when coming back to the line and resuming the play. Since Paganello is BULA and BULA is WFDF, we went with the rules. And in the rules, there’s no check when coming back to the line. No biggie, it was solved as usual, without hands being thrown. Both teams really wanted to win, aims set on the recovery game to take their team a little bit higher to places 17-24.

We came out on top with 11-9 and the recovery game was ours to keep. That game was a different story. It’s ironic really. We got Tailspin’s predecessor, Super Mannschaft as the opponent. Since they were in the upper pool O, and lost all their games there, they got into the recovery game. They made the same trip from Junior division to Open back in 2007, and I remember playing them with Mr. Twister. The outcome was the same, the score a bit different. Back then, it was them winning by 9-8. This time around it was 15-9.

Al lost his legs, but found them later. He did not get on the Les Invalides-roster!

3 hours later, it was time for the “quarter final” against Les Invalides from France. Probably the most fun game we had in the tournament! They got our Spirit vote, even if the Syndrome rap at the end went so-so heh.. We sailed onto the “semi” by beating them 12-6. Our quarter final opponent was Sublime from UK. I’ve met some at Glastonbury, worked with some at EUC ‘07 in Southampton etc. They too had their own Swedish fan. Good thing was that she was bit hesitant who to cheer for, us or them.. The game was a bit tighter though, it ended up 14-11 in our favor.

All in all, and I quote Ice Cube, it was a good day. We were now in the final bracket for 25-26th place. And the opponent..? Old acquaintances.

Awesome team dinner at a pretty good pizza place, pick-and-share-pizzas for everyone.

Yet another Swedish ultimate forum

Monday, February 16th, 2009

With Ultimateprat (Ultimatetalk in Swedish), a forum for Swedish ultimate players has once again risen. There’s only 12 members at the time, but that’s possibly because of the earlier lack of subforums and not that good advertising. But here it is, start using it! But this time, keep it clean. I’ll be watching and enforcing. Have fun!

This COTP shows a fast recap of the Russian indoor tournament Lord Novgorod in Veliky Novgorod. It was made for the 10 year anniversary of the tournament.

If you look close enough, you can find a Swedish classic flashing by, still with the robocop brace firm in place. I am a bit disappointed that I didn’t show up on the clips from 2001! The TV could have been a bit bigger, but I guess it’s a Adobe setting. One of the strongest memories I have from that tournament was the blistering cold and huge pot holes. There are of course other memories, some a bit more vague, but I don’t think they are that suitable for this blog. Sometime I will go back. I promise.

The pitches in the next COTP comes close to competing with Dive Hard XII for the hardest pitch ever, but hell, playing in the desert also kicks up a lot of dust. I don’t know what’s worse; dying of clogged lounges or getting your rib cage mangled. And talking about Dive Hard, the 13th edition will take place May 30th-31st. Get your game on!

Winter Trophy ‘09 comes to an end.

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

I might not have been on the sidelines as much as I thought I would be, but hey, there’s more than Ultimate when you are injured. So who took the gold? Skogshyddan won over Karhukopla (spelled Karhakapla on the scoreboard..?) and Sharks from Russia beat Viima 1 from Helsinki!

I obviously need a new crystal ball. Or at least polish my old one. Great to see a russian women’s team to take the first place! I don’t think that many expected it. I’ve seen the players around for some time in baltic tournaments and what not and they sure have evolved to a good bunch of players! The game for third, it seems that Gronical Dizziness won over Iceni. In open, Westervik beat Viksjöfors for third place.

Syndromes Open had a somewhat boring weekend in the sense that we got to play two teams twice, EZ Ultimate and AKKA, but won all four games. We lost to Brighton, Otso and Stenungsund. I was so bored on the sideline, and I tried really hard not to become the designated cameraman, and more or less succeeded with my task.

I didn’t see that many of the women’s games, and since the final standings ain’t up yet, I can’t get any hard facts. I heard something about 8th place, but can’t be certain. They ended up in 10th place. Too bad.

COTD: Winter Trophy ‘09 Trailer

And the open final? I did see some hotheadedness from a new, but promising, player in Skogshyddan wanted to discuss a foul call a bit too close to the Karhukopla players face. According to his jersey, his name was Hamstein! I thought he quit playing ;) And the open final? Was there a alleged need for observers? You who watched it, would it have made a difference?

I heard the game between KFUM Örebro and SOKOL Flying Steps was hell. And because of the comments, I must rewrite this bit. Apparently, SOKOL didn’t play Örebro, it was Flying Steps. I havent talked to anyone from Örebro, time to do it I guess. And regarding SOKOL and Black.ru, I know that Black.ru was a pickup team, for some tournaments. But what I saw of SOKOL in Riga Rudens (2006 i think) a few years back, and in our game against Black.ru in Kick in de kök, made me make a hasty (and perhaps faulty) comparison. Some players are the same too. Sorry for that. Were there any Flying Steps players in Black.ru? And to be honest.. I’m not surprised. We’ve played SOKOL / Black.ru and it’s not exactly happy happy joy joy. I saw them in the final in Riga Rudens a few years back and it was the same story. Outright cheating. When we met Black.ru in Kick in the Kök, we had the same problems. Novgorod Bears actually apologized for Black.ru’s behaviour. And that game costed us a night’s worth of useful stuff, due to the low spirit score..

This doesn’t show a need for observers, it show’s that there’s a need to root out the bad seeds. Next time, simply don’t invite teams that are considered bad spritied and just tell them why! My experience of them is that they wouldn’t argue less just because there was someone on the sideline making active line-calls. They would probably start to argue with the observers instead.

A new start.

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Recently I was thinking whether to drop this blog or not, and came to the conclusion that it didn’t fill much function. But something during this early morning, made me rethink and decided to keep it anyways and ramp up the post frequency. And I feel that Swedish Ultimate need a antagonist (not in a bad way) to the blogmaster of the west coast Nicklas Tehler! Nicklas possibly got more insight in Swedish Ultimate, but I’ll try to keep up or run past.

So what’s next? Easy. Winter Trophy ‘09. Once again, Skogs Ultimate filled the worlds best (probably) indoor tournament to the max with 32 open teams and 16 women teams. Syndromes enters both divisions and with Force Fyris in mind, it looks promising. Especially the ladies that won over Stenungsund. The final results can’t be found, since both uppsalafrisbee.se and frisbeesport.se not as updated as you may expect.

And who takes it all? Even if Viksjöfors won back in 2006, Skogs has a tendency to grab the first place. But according to someone, hope is the last thing that leaves the human, so I can’t stop hoping that Syndromes will win this year. Alongside Syndromes, VIF and Otso are my own favorites, but maybe not necessarily to win. In the women’s division, it’s about the same. I hope that Syndromes will perform as well as last time and takes 1st place. The line-up looks promising. Last years winners Iceni is back for more, and since I’m allowed to guess, I think we’ll see Sweden and UK in final and Sweden and Finland in the game for 3rd.

I’ll be in place watching the weekend take its course. Indoor sport photos usually means shitty pictures. Wish I had a more light sensitive lens for my camera so I at least could get some good pictures this time. And it’s not like I got money to pay for one. I guess I got to hit the state lottery or something. Or just charge the club for it heh..

See you in Goth-enburg!
