The saturday is a blur of winning games. We ended up playing 45 Giri, which earlier amused me, only by the connection to their seed at 45th place. They were a good bunch of locals that didn’t put us into too much trouble, we beat them by 12-3.
The game after was FSL, and I don’t really remember anything about it. At all. Except winning. There are no photos, since our designated still photographer became the designated film camera man. The game ended 14-5. When I think about it, the Good Old Boys also slipped my mind. Most important thing is that we won I guess, 15-7.
Sunday morning was a different story. Walking home from the pitches we met most of the young Swedish team Tailspin walking in the opposite direction, pretty tanked and geared up for the roman party in the tent. This made us a bit calmer for the morning game, thinking that it would affect them quite a bit. Problem was, that quite a few of our players also went to the tent, tanked and geared too.
15 minutes before game time, only one Tailspin-player can be seen. Unfortunately, they soon all emerge at the pitch, totally different from what we met last night. Damn these youngsters. During their pep talk, I overhear them stating “We can’t loose to Stockholm!”. I was a bit afraid that they would run us over without problems. But the game became quite intense, and a rule difference between WFDF and UPA sparked a discussion; whether you should check the disc when coming back to the line and resuming the play. Since Paganello is BULA and BULA is WFDF, we went with the rules. And in the rules, there’s no check when coming back to the line. No biggie, it was solved as usual, without hands being thrown. Both teams really wanted to win, aims set on the recovery game to take their team a little bit higher to places 17-24.

Jon got a spin on his tail, but to no avail
We came out on top with 11-9 and the recovery game was ours to keep. That game was a different story. It’s ironic really. We got Tailspin’s predecessor, Super Mannschaft as the opponent. Since they were in the upper pool O, and lost all their games there, they got into the recovery game. They made the same trip from Junior division to Open back in 2007, and I remember playing them with Mr. Twister. The outcome was the same, the score a bit different. Back then, it was them winning by 9-8. This time around it was 15-9.

Al lost his legs, but found them later.
3 hours later, it was time for the “quarter final” against Les Invalides from France. Probably the most fun game we had in the tournament! They got our Spirit vote, even if the Syndrome rap at the end went so-so heh.. We sailed onto the “semi” by beating them 12-6. Our quarter final opponent was Sublime from UK. I’ve met some at Glastonbury, worked with some at EUC ‘07 in Southampton etc. They too had their own Swedish fan. Good thing was that she was bit hesitant who to cheer for, us or them.. The game was a bit tighter though, it ended up 14-11 in our favor.

A taste of Swedish candy
All in all, and I quote Ice Cube, it was a good day. We were now in the final bracket for 25-26th place. And the opponent..? Old acquaintances.
Awesome team dinner at a pretty good pizza place, pick-and-share-pizzas for everyone.
