Whenever I check out Vimeo, Google Video or Youtube for Ultimate videos, I find myself amazed over some of the clips. They’re usually mockumentaries and they suck pretty hard. It clutters the sites with light sabres, ridiculing instructional videos and spoofs…? There’s an honest documentary attempt to to portray the “Ultimate Warrior Athletes of Character” of West Point. It shows wanna-be military leaders of tomorrow trying to put on a decent game. Someone mentions winning the state championship. Good luck with that.
I think that all this crap actually helps the en masse of Ultimate doubters to keep badmouthing the sport. The videos should be as self-regulating as the sport claims to be. No wonder that the non-playing community laugh at the sport when they see stuff like this and this. It doesn’t matter if the funny clip is made by Ultimate players or not, people doesn’t realize the “Pun intended”-tag was lost during the upload.
Then we have the morons adding “Ultimate Frisbee”-tags to any Frisbee-clip online. Dogs, delay-fests (freestyle), baskets and so on. At least in Sweden, Disc Golf has far more players than Ultimate, even though at least (my own estimation) half of them bring a can of beer for every hole. So why add it? It’s nowhere near Ultimate. Neither is Holwerda.
Regarding Cheap seats take on Ultimate and Kenny Dobbins, I’ll let it slip since they’re flaming everyone. And Kenny Dobbins.
I think it was UPA or UKUltimate that produced an instructional video showing high-level Ultimate from all divisions, removing the label of being something you do only at the beach. I think the Swedish Frisbee Federation should produce something similar and send out to schools/universities on a usb stick or make it available for download or something. The PE Teachers might find it boring to show a video before a lesson, but hey, at least they could try. Something like Rabbit Production’s Jolian Dahl highlight showreel mixed up with basic instructional footage.
